Ghanaian Footballer Kwame Conte Bonsu has been released after serving a year of his two-year jail term for allegedly raping his Swedish Wife Maria Magnusson.
The former Gefle IF midfielder was set free after further investigations by the Gävle District Court and has been expelled from Sweden.
Speaking on UTV’s evening news bulletin, the footballer narrated his ordeal saying “there were no prior misunderstandings between himself and his wife since their marriage in 2015. His wife accused him of rape when he wanted them to separate. A few months into our marriage, I noticed changes in her behaviour I found I could not cope with and asked that we be separated… it was out of the grief of separation that she accused me of rape.
“Honestly speaking, they (the court) had no evidence on the rape charges but being on a foreigner’s land with nobody to support, it became hard to defend myself against a native… I had only my team send me letters of support… the Ghanaian embassy could not play any role in my case as my communication with the outside world was cut.”
He further stated that he was released following the inability of the court to acquire concrete evidence and the court decided to keep him locked no longer.
The 23-year old has been deported to Ghana after serving half of his prison term and this resulted in the termination of his contract with Gefle IF rendering him unemployed and a free agent in the football world.
“Football is still my passion and I am open to being signed to any local or foreign team. I still want to carry on with my football career.”
