The Government of Ghana on Monday, held a ”Value for Money” Conference which brought stakeholders in academia, engineering and experts together in the construction sector of the economy in Accra.
The conference also sought to tap into the expertise in the construction sector from both local and foreign minds in the world and brainstorm how best government can ensure value for money in government projects.
Delivering the keynote address at the conference, Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia noted that government hospital projects in the past were overpriced, hence did not ensure value for money.
Dr. Bawumia stated that "when you look at these numbers and we will listen to the experts, what we are seeing is that for one hospital that we are building for US$25 million dollars, we could have built six hospitals".
"If Dangote can build a 1000 bed capacity hospital for under US$20 million dollars, it brings the question of why Ghana builds an even smaller capacity hospital or four hundred bed hospital for nearly US$300 million dollars. These are more questions we have to interrogate", he added.
While in opposition, the then Running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Bawumia accused the Mahama-led administration of overpricing hospital and other government projects that were undertaken by then ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
