It is just a year ago when Ghana experienced a tragedy. That is the flooding of the Odaw River, which led to the lost of many lives.
After the tragedy, the Accra Mayor, Hon. Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, together with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), carried out an exercise to clear water ways. They collapsed buildings and removed kiosk. This was to prevent flood in the near future.
Another worrying factor that can be a major cause of a future flooding of the Odaw River is the major gutters leading to the river. These gutters are filled to half with sand. This has become a major threat to residents of the area, since there could be flood after a heavy down-pour.
According to Mr. Foster Kodjo Ahianyo, NADMO Coordinator for Ayawaso Central Sub-metro, measures are being taken by the AMA to dredge the main drains. “The dredging of the main drains has been of tremendous help, otherwise, the recent rains would have caused a serious flood in the area,” he said in an interview with GIJ online.
“Measures are to be put in place by the AMA to relocate residents around the main drains,” he said.
