Sanitation in Accra has been a big blow to the government of Ghana. A few years ago, Accra has been the leading region with filth. The government therefore tried to put in place measures to improve upon the sanitation in Accra. Together with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), dustbins have been provided at vantage points to allow people throw unwanted materials inside.
Also, the government, in collaboration with District Assembly have charged individuals to have a clean-up exercise at the end of every month which has helped a lot.
For some time now, places like Spintex road, Dankwa Circle, 37 Military hospital all through Nima Police Station to Kwame Nkrumah Circle are now in a good condition. The filth in those areas are not that much.
The main problem now is Kwame Nkrumah Circle where there is more work to be done.
Some individuals, NGOs have also taken some initiatives to help keep Accra neat by organising people to clean up the streets, market places, etc. which has really helped in the improvement of sanitation in the city.
Speaking to a resident of the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Naa Ameley via GIJ online news, she said she, together with some residents in her area clean up the area every weekend, removing dirt from the gutters and also sweeping the streets to make their place neat.
The problem is that some of the people who remove the dirt from the gutters do not collect them but leave them so when it rains or the wind blows, the dirt is sent back into the gutters and around making the place dirty again. Also pedestrians, when they finish eating throw the rubbish anywhere making the place dirty.
