Telenovelas, since its introduction on some of Ghana's television networks have become popular amongst the youth and some adult women.
Most viewers claim they learn and acquire some social skills from the various episodes shown daily on the TV stations. Telenovelas are soap opera series originally produced in Latin-American countries like Mexico, Brazil and has become popular throughout the world.
Soap operas and telenovelas started in the late 1990's with the Brazilian series Escrava Isaura on GTV. By 2000 other series like Bold and beautiful, Esmeralda, Acapulco bay, Cuandos Sias Mia, Juana La Virgin, The Promise, and Timeless emerged on other TV channels.
Currently almost every television station in Ghana shows one or more telenovelas a day. TV 3 shows three of these telenovelas in a day; Brave Woman- Mondays to Thursdays, Abyss of Passion- Mondays to Fridays. UTV has three shows in a week.
Speaking to GIJ online news, some members of the public expressed their preference for the telenovelas than local Ghanaian movies.
People also indicated that they watch such movies for the fun of it. They watch during their leisure in order to relax and also to kill time when their day gets boring.
Aside the good aspect attached to these soap operas are some negativities expressed by others who do not like these movies. To them, the youth and children learn the things they see on the screens, leaving their cultures behind.
