Burning of refuse and other hazardous materials is prevalent in the urban cities. In Accra, Agbogbloshie is a typical area where this is practiced. The act is mainly carried out by the teeming youth. Scrap dealers as they are affectionately called, scavenge for waste products that contain metals. In order to extract this profitable metal that is coated with rubber, they gather a collection of them and set it ablaze. This produces heavy smoke into the atmosphere which contains toxic substances posing serious health threats to the residents around.
However, the activities of scrap dealers are not the only means of polluting the air in the community, but the continual dumping of rubbish by the residents around unauthorized sites is also a leading factor adding to the menace.
Some residents especially nursing mothers that the news team interacted with, complained bitterly about the happenings in the community. They said the smoke causes them and their children to fall sick. They however added that they have not lodged an official complaint to authorities because those engaged in the act are mostly their husbands and bread winners. Others said that governments have always referred to them as squatters and wanted to evacuate them from the area, for that reason they don’t engage officials in the situation.
